1. One Resume for Every Application

Sending the same resume to every company, regardless of role, is the single most common mistake. Hiring managers can tell within seconds, and ATS keyword matching penalizes it directly.

2. Listing Responsibilities Instead of Results

"Responsible for backend development" tells a reader nothing about your impact. "Reduced API latency by 40% by redesigning the caching layer" tells them everything. Every bullet should describe an outcome, not a duty.

3. Missing the Job Description's Keywords

ATS filters and human skimmers both scan for specific terms from the posting. If a JD says "distributed systems" and your resume says "backend infrastructure," you may be filtered out for a mismatch that doesn't reflect reality.

4. Burying Your Most Relevant Experience

Hiring managers spend seconds, not minutes, on a first pass. If your most relevant project for this specific role is buried on page two, it may never be seen. Reorder for relevance, not strict chronology.

5. Resumes That Are Too Long or Too Sparse

For most candidates outside of very senior levels, one page is the right length. Padding with irrelevant detail dilutes your strongest points; being too sparse leaves a reader with unanswered questions.
